Dr. Lee Anthony Underwood is a Licensed Psychologist at The Scoggan Institute with more than 40 years of experience in behavioral health and over 30 years as a licensed Child and Adolescent Psychologist. His career spans clinical practice, academia, research, program development, forensic psychology, consultation, and expert witness work at both state and national levels. Dr. Underwood brings exceptional depth and clinical authority to complex psychological evaluation, forensic assessment, and high-acuity mental health care.
Dr. Underwood’s work is grounded in a comprehensive, evidence-informed approach that integrates clinical precision, ethical rigor, and systems-level understanding. He is known for his ability to assess and treat severe and multifaceted presentations while maintaining a clear focus on functional outcomes, safety, and long-term stability. His clinical style balances thorough evaluation with thoughtful clinical judgment, supporting individuals, families, agencies, and legal systems in making informed decisions.
Dr. Underwood earned his Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) from Wright State University and a Master’s degree in Counseling and Family Services from Regent University. He completed his pre-doctoral psychology internship at Interact Behavioral Healthcare in Columbus, Ohio, followed by post-doctoral training with the Ohio Department of Youth Services. He is licensed as a psychologist in Arizona and Virginia and is a Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider (CSOTP) in the state of Virginia.
Throughout his career, Dr. Underwood has specialized in working with children, adolescents, and adults with severe and complex mental health needs. His clinical and evaluative experience spans outpatient, intensive outpatient (IOP), residential, inpatient, and correctional settings. This breadth of experience allows him to assess risk, level of care, and treatment needs with exceptional accuracy across diverse populations and systems.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Underwood serves as an executive with Forensic Practices of Arizona (FAPA) and USA Consulting Group, LLC, where he provides consultation, training, program design, and program evaluation to county, state, federal, and private agencies nationwide. He has held senior leadership roles including Chief Clinical Officer, Clinical Director, Clinical Administrator, and Program Administrator across public and private behavioral health systems.
Dr. Underwood also conducts comprehensive psychological and forensic evaluations across the United States and has served as an expert witness in multiple states, offering testimony and consultation on standards of care, psychological harm, risk assessment, treatment efficacy, and best practices.
