Colleen’s Story – A Mother’s Journey with OCD

“Thanks to The Scoggan Institute, both my son and I are living with a freedom I never thought possible.”

OCD has been with me for as long as I can remember. I never received treatment growing up, so I raised my family believing many of my compulsions were simply “normal.” When my son began showing signs of OCD a few years ago, I knew what it was, but nothing could prepare me for how severe it became. His compulsions and isolation took over our lives—he stopped talking, withdrew from us, and I felt like I was losing him piece by piece. No matter what we tried, nothing seemed to help, and as his mom, it was devastating.

When we found The Scoggan Institute, everything changed. Ricky immediately understood what my son was going through, and for the first time in a long time, there was hope. Within just a few weeks, my son started talking and laughing again. The isolation lifted, and I could finally breathe, knowing I had my caring, funny boy back.

But the journey didn’t stop there. Ricky also helped me face my own OCD—the patterns I had lived with all my life without realizing how much they were controlling me. Today, I can go out more freely, worry less about contamination, and enjoy things like going to restaurants without fear. It feels like I’m meeting myself for the first time, without OCD calling the shots.

Thanks to The Scoggan Institute, both my son and I are living with a freedom I never thought possible. Our home feels lighter, our family stronger, and our future brighter.

Kayden’s Story- My Mom and Brother struggled with OCD until…

“It feels like I got my brother back—and I’m meeting my mom for the first time without OCD.”

My whole life has been surrounded by OCD. Even though I don’t have it myself, I grew up with my mom’s struggles and then, three years ago, my brother started showing symptoms too. Over time, his OCD became so overwhelming that he didn’t even seem like my brother anymore. He isolated himself, stopped talking to us, and withdrew from family life. The therapist he was seeing wasn’t helping, and we were at a complete loss.

At home, things became harder and harder. My parents and I found ourselves constantly doing compulsions for him, and it drained so much of our time and energy. I felt exhausted, frustrated, and helpless watching OCD steal him away.

After months of searching, my mom found The Scoggan Institute. For the first time, we felt a glimmer of hope. We booked a consultation right away, and after meeting Ricky, I knew this was the right place for my brother. Ricky was calm, approachable, and incredibly knowledgeable—he immediately understood what we were going through. My brother had lost hope of recovery, but Ricky gave him a sense of energy and determination to fight back against OCD.

After just three weeks in treatment, the change has been amazing. My brother talks again. He laughs with us. He’s no longer isolating himself. Every time I come home, I notice how different things feel—I can finally breathe again. It feels like I got my funny, caring brother back.

But my brother’s story is only half of it. My mom has lived with OCD her entire life, though she had never received therapy for it. Her OCD was different from my brother’s, which made life at home even more complicated. Since I grew up around her rituals, I thought many of them were “normal.” Through therapy at The Scoggan Institute, Ricky has helped my mom too. For the first time, I’m meeting my mom without her OCD controlling her. She goes out more, worries less, and can enjoy everyday things like eating at restaurants without fear.

OCD doesn’t just affect the person who has it—it affects the entire family. Thanks to The Scoggan Institute, we’re finally healing together.
